In the 2017-2018 season, the two great opponents of Argentina, River Plate and Boca Juniors, were in the final of the Copa Libertadores. For the first time in the history of the tournament the final was the Superclassico of Latin America.

The first final was scheduled for November 10, 2018 at Boca Stadium but was postponed due to extreme weather conditions that turned La Bombonera into a “swimming pool”. The match took place on November 11 and ended 2-2 with Boca Juniors leading twice and River equalizing both.

The rematch was scheduled for November 24, 2018 at Estadio Monumental. The match never started as the bus which transported the Boca players to the stadium was attacked injuring the team's players. Big fights ensued, the match was postponed shortly before the start and was scheduled for the next day. The tension in the streets around the stadium continued the next day with the result that the match was postponed again.

CONMEBOL decided to hold the second final outside Argentina but also outside Latin America. On December 9, 2018, the Santiago Bernabéu hosted the final and for the first time in history, a final of a continental event was held on a different continent.

Boca Juniors took the lead with Benedetto but River equalized with Pratto in the second half. In the finals of the Copa Libertadores, the away goal is not valid, as a result of which the match is led to extra time. With goals from Quintero and Martinez, River won 3-1 and won the trophy on Spanish soil.

Τη σεζόν 2017-2018 βρέθηκαν στον τελικό του Copa Libertadores οι δύο μεγάλοι αντίπαλοι της Αργεντινής, Ρίβερ Πλέιτ και Μπόκα Τζούνιορς. Για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία της διοργάνωσης ο τελικός ήταν το Superclassico της Λατινικής Αμερικής.

Ο πρώτος τελικός ήταν ορισμένος για τις 10 Νοεμβρίου 2018 στο γήπεδο της Μπόκα αλλά αναβλήθηκε λόγω ακραίων καιρικών συνθηκών που μετέτρεψαν το La Bombonera σε… πισίνα. Ο αγώνας διεξήχθη στις 11 Νοεμβρίου και τελείωσε 2-2 με την Μπόκα Τζούνιορς να προηγείται δύο φορές και τη Ρίβερ να ισοφαρίζει και τις δύο.

Ο επαναληπτικός ήταν προγραμματισμένος για τις 24 Νοεμβρίου 2018 στην έδρα της Ρίβερ, το Estadio Monumental. Ο αγώνας δεν ξεκίνησε ποτέ καθώς το πούλμαν που μετέφερε τους παίκτες της Μπόκα στο γήπεδο δέχτηκε επίθεση τραυματίζοντας παίκτες της ομάδας. Ακολούθησαν μεγάλες συμπλοκές, ο αγώνας αναβλήθηκε λίγο πριν την έναρξή του και προγραμματίστηκε για την επόμενη μέρα. Η ένταση στους δρόμους γύρω από το γήπεδο συνεχίστηκε και την επόμενη μέρα με αποτέλεσμα ο αγώνας να αναβληθεί εκ νέου.

Η CONMEBOL αποφάσισε να διεξαχθεί ο δεύτερος τελικός εκτός Αργεντινής αλλά και εκτός Λατινικής Αμερικής. Στις 9 Δεκεμβρίου 2018 το Santiago Bernabéu φιλοξένησε τον τελικό και για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία πραγματοποιήθηκε τελικός ηπειρωτικής διοργάνωσης σε διαφορετική ήπειρο.

Η Μπόκα Τζούνιορς προηγήθηκε με τον Μπενεντέτο αλλά η Ρίβερ ισοφάρισε με τον Πράττο στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο. Στους τελικούς του Copa Libertadores δεν ισχύει το εκτός έδρας γκολ με αποτέλεσμα ο αγώνας να οδηγηθεί στην παράταση. Με γκολ των Κιντέρο και Μαρτίνες η Ρίβερ κέρδισε με 3-1 και κατέκτησε το τρόπαιο σε ισπανικό έδαφος.
